Lab-grown diamonds are the diamonds cultivated in the laboratory. At present, there are two methods to make the lab-grown diamond, one is the HPHT diamond (high pressure high temperature), and the other one is CVD diamond (chemical vapor deposition). Although the diamonds are cultivated in the laboratory, the principle of growth is the same as that of natural diamonds.
In order to prove the lab-grown diamonds, the authoritative testing institutions of GIA Gemological Institute of America and IGI International Gemological Institute not only provide natural diamond certificates, but man-made diamonds can also enjoy identification services.
At present, GIA, IGI are the most authoritative ones for lab grown diamonds, which are the mainstream of lab-grown diamond certification/report.
(I) GIA Report for Lab-Grown Diamonds
GIA is the abbreviation of Gemological Institute of America and is the authority in the diamond industry. The lab-grown diamond certification issued by GIA is recognized by the industry.
The main contents of the GIA certificate include the following:
1) Identification content
Lab grown diamonds
2) Specifications (Measurements)
Specifications min diameter * max diameter * height
3) Weight (Carat Weight)
Diamonds are measured in carats, 1 carat = 0.2 grams. The heavier the diamond, the rarer it is.
The CVD lab-grown diamonds rough we supplied are up to 10 carats.
4) Color
The colors of lab grown diamonds are (DEF) colorless, (G-L) close to colorless, (M, N) light yellow.
The CVD lab-grown diamonds we supplied are better than G color in average.
5) Clarity
Use a 10x magnifying glass to observe the interior and exterior of the diamond, and divide the clarity into 6 grades, namely FL, IF, VVS, VS, SI, I
The CVD lab-grown diamonds we supplied are better than VS clarity.
6) Polish
Cut includes three aspects: cut, polish and symmetry. Divided into 6 grades, namely ID, EX, VG, G, FR, PR. Grown diamonds have the same cut as natural diamonds.
7) The shape of the diamond
Such as Emerald Cut
8) Fluorescence
9) Added inscription
The laser engraving on the waist will be engraved with the words “LABORATORY GROWN” in addition to the certificate number.
10) Labeling instructions
The last column of the GIA report states that the diamond is a lab-grown diamond.
At present, GIA only issues electronic lab-grown diamond certification. The paper certificates are printed by the merchants themselves. The GIA lab-grown diamond report and the natural diamond report have different layouts, with the words “LGDR” in white on a blue background and on the front cover and inside pages. The product name and remarks are basically the same as IGI. GIA, similar to IGI, also has a small certificate, and the small certificate does not have a clarity description chart. If a GIA certificate is issued for lab-grown diamonds, in addition to the electronic certificate, there is also an information card. Customers must pay attention to this detail when making the purchase.
The certificate number of the lab-grown diamond, which is equivalent to the ID number of the lab grown diamond. You can check the information about the lab-grown diamond on the official website of GIA through this number, and the number will also be engraved on the waist of the diamond.
4C determine the value of diamonds, and lab-grown diamonds also have 4C. We can see that the 4C of diamonds are clearly marked on the GIA lab grown diamond certificate.
The GIA Lab-Grown Diamond Certificate has a clear indication of the cultivation method of the diamond, whether it is the HPHT high pressure high temperature or the CVD chemical vapor deposition method, and it also clearly states whether the diamond has color refinement. In addition, the GIA lab-grown diamond certificate has a detailed description of the diamond’s table width ratio, fluorescence, symmetry, etc.
(II) IGI Certificate for Lab-Grown Diamond
IGI International Testing Institute was established in Antwerp, Belgium, the world diamond center in 1975, and is the largest jewelry identification laboratory in the world. The IGI lab-grown diamond certificate has the same information as the natural diamond certificate. The certificate of the IGI international testing agency is basically the same as the description of the GIA certificate, mainly including identification content, color grade, clarity grade, and cut. In addition to the certificate number, man-made diamonds differ from natural diamonds in that they have a laser-engraved “lab grown” logo on the waist.
